When you are choosing your career or your next move, how do you choose it? Are you making the following mistake like many others? As I grow and meet more and more people, I found out that there is one huge mistake that a lot of people make, and in fact, it is the people that made this one particular mistake, told me that I gotta avoid this like the plague, as I am still young and can still alter the course of my life — they, on the other hand, are too late to change. Although when I am writing, you are like an imaginary figure to me, I know that you are probably quite young and sometimes, you also question whats the next move, is this how its gonna be for the rest of your life. You might be thinking whether the current job is best for you, and whether you should switch lanes and try another field. Let me share this one particular career mistake with you, so you can have the best life possible.
Enough of the talk, lets get to the point!
Here is the point: Do not chase after a certain industry because it feels like it is a superior career.
Look. You might see that the finance industry or the AI industry is booming. It feels like there are a lot of great opportunities in that field, and the future is there. But notice that if you can see this, a lot of other people in Hong Kong, or in the world as a whole is seeing this as well, and that would include some really talented people. Eventually, that means you are going to have to compete with them. Sometimes, because of how “crowded” that these “superior” industries are, it could be very hard for you to get a slice in it. In fact, it might be possible that if you go the totally opposite direction, do something that nobody would think of doing, and probably lower-paying as well, you could build something there. All the A Players and B+ players went to go for the Investment Banks and Tech Giants, you go to the laundry business, which no body wants to do. Even if you are a B player, you might be the best laundry business in the industry.
