New Reads: Same as Ever by Morgan Housel

  • by

A friend recently recommended the book Same as Ever by Morgan Housel to me. And when someone you respect and admire recommend a book to you, you gotta immediately get the book and read it.

Now last night when I was reading this book, I came across a really good quote, from the 98-year-old Charlie Munger:

The first rule of a happy life is low expectations. If you have unrealistic expectations you’re going to be miserable your whole life. You want to have reasonable expectations and take life’s result, good and bad, as they happen with a certain amount of stoicism.

I think in life it is very easy to get addicted to “success”, or what is more accurate. comparing ourselves to others. It is these comparisons that make us discontent with what we have, discontent with our lives. We think we are not successful enough, not good enough, and all these make us miserable.

There is a gap between working hard and being motivated and comparing ourselves too much with others and feeling unsatisfied with our progress in life. However it is very hard to explain this to one. It will take time for one to truly understand and get it.
